Rakitic on Modric: Our captain deserves first and foremost that we follow him

Image
The Barcelona star has paid tribute to a domestic rival from Real Madrid as a united nation go in search of glory at Russia 2018 Ivan Rakitic heaped praise on Croatia captain Luka Modric as he reiterated the desire to repay the Real Madrid star heading into Saturday's World Cup quarter-final against Russia. Rakitic lauded Modric as Croatia trumped Denmark in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to reach the last eight of the showpiece tournament, revealing he told his team-mates they had to give something back to the 32-year-old midfielder. And Barcelona's Rakitic was glowing in his praise of Modric – who missed a penalty in extra time but converted from the spot during the shoot-out – again on the eve of Croatia's clash at Fisht Stadium in Sochi. "Our captain deserves first and foremost that we follow him," Rakitic told reporters on Friday. "At any moment, we do whatever he shows us and go where he tells us. "Luckily, I've been playing alongsid...

Muslera commits one of World Cup's biggest errors

Image
After conceding an embarrassing goal against France in the World Cup, Uruguay goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera, became an involuntary villain for his team. During their World Cup quarter-final showdown against Les Bleus and with the score at 1-0 to the opposition, the Galatasaray man gifted the French the vital second goal. In the 61st minute, Antoine Griezmann sent a tame effort straight at Muslera, who fluffed his lines and inadvertently sent the ball spinning back into his own net. That strike took the wind out of Uruguay's sails and they went on to be beaten 2-0.

Yes, goalkeepers also win (and lose) World Cups

Image
It was etched on Jose Gimenez's face before the game was over. On the field with the score 2-0 in France's favour against Uruguay and with time almost up, his anger and disappointment was evidenced with the tears streaming down his face. He has suffered with Atletico Madrid and did so once again, this time for his country. An impossible save and an inexplicable goal ended their dream as desire wasn't enough for Uruguay. Goalkeepers also win World Cups and they lose them too, something which was summed up by Hugo Lloris and Fernando Muslera. Failures and errors are repeated much more often on television than the saves. We saw much less of the Tottenham goalkeeper's flying right hand than we did of Muslera's error. "As much as Griezmann says that he is Uruguayan, he is French and doesn't know what Uruguay sentiment is," Luis Suarez said in the build-up to the game. The man who could have been his teammate at club level ...

Cameroon legend Patrick Mboma on why Africa failed in the World Cup

Image
The former Paris Saint Germain striker featured for Cameroon at two World Cups and won an Olympic gold medal in the year 2000 Cameroon legend Patrick Mboma feels that indigenous African coaches are the right answer if the continent is to become a dominant force in world football. Senegal, Nigeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia plunged into battle in Russia, but were all sent back home at the group stages with only Senegal and Tunisia led by native coaches. Having played at two Fifa World Cups himself, Mboma has called for homegrown solutions, starting with pro domestic leagues developing local coaches. “Yes, football has to be professionalised in Africa. The question is not new,” Mboma told SoFoot. “Out of North Africa and Southern Africa, there is a lot to do to improve the local leagues, structures, training of young people, coaches, and so forth. But I recall that in Russia most of the coaches were mainly overseas or European. I hope some federations will work b...
